Budget Mono Water Necromancer

Inspired by @Ceej’s Water Necro Archetype

This list is inspired by @Ceej’s Mono Water Necromancer build, which helped establish the archetype as one of the strongest Water strategies in the current meta.

This version is designed to:

Serve as a solid starting foundation
Be accessible for new players
Offer a budget-friendly entry point
Provide a strong base that can later be upgraded toward the full competitive version

If you own cards from @Ceej’s full list, you can absolutely use them to upgrade this build over time. This is not meant to replace that list — it’s meant to help players start building toward it.

Why Necromancer?

The reason this archetype works is simple:

Guaranteed board presence every turn.

Skeleton tokens mean:

Always a defender
Always an Intercept threat
Always sacrifice fuel
Always a Polymorph target
Always swarm potential

You are never empty.

That consistency is why this deck is excellent for newer players while still being strategically deep.

Core Game Plan

You operate in three modes:

Stall & Stabilize
Control Through Positioning
Finish with Bombs

You decide when the game ends.

1️⃣ Early Game – Stall the Board

You are not racing early.

Your early tools:

Cheap Minions

Firewisp
Polar Explorers
Sir Pellas
Lugbog Cat
Order of the Sacred Oak

Their role:

Intercept
Trade efficiently
Protect sites
Buy time

Skeleton tokens from Necromancer make this phase extremely stable. You almost always have something to defend with.

2️⃣ Efficient Removal – The Full Removal Package

This deck contains a large amount of removal — it just doesn’t look like traditional “destroy target” effects.

It removes through terrain, forced movement, sacrifice, and transformation.

3× Thin Ice
3× Troll Bridge
2× Bog
3× Floodplain
2× Underow
3× Babbling Brook

You don’t overpower units.

You make them stand somewhere fatal.

Thin Ice + forced movement is true removal.

Troll Bridge forces unfavorable combat.

Bog and Floodplain restrict mobility and shape the map in your favor.

Water wins through geography.

🌊 Forced Movement Removal

3× Coy Nixie
1× Overpower
1× Swap
2× Riptide
1× Into the Abyss
1× Call of the Sea

Coy Nixie is the engine.

She:

Pulls enemies onto Thin Ice
Pulls enemies onto Troll Bridge
Breaks defensive lines
Isolates priority targets

Swap creates surprise lethals.

Riptide and Into the Abyss punish overextension.

This is positional removal at its finest.

These effects give you:

Forced sacrifice
Stat pressure
Board-wide attrition
Utility flexibility

Toolbox is particularly strong in budget builds because it turns small minions into tactical answers.

🧬 Transform as Removal & Pressure

2× Polymorph
3× Shapeshift
3× Failed Mutation
2× Mimic

This package lets you:

Upgrade Skeletons
Break stalled boards
Convert defense into offense

Common transformation targets:

Gnarled Wendigo
Harkening Kraken
Serawyn Hydra
Dormant Monstrosity

Because Transform keeps the same game object (rulebook – Transform ), you don’t lose tempo doing this.

3️⃣ Life Gain – Font of Life

3× Font of Life

Font is your longevity engine.

It:

Offsets site damage
Buys extra turns
Stabilizes close games

Once an Avatar reaches Death’s Door, only damage can finish them (rulebook – Death’s Door ).

Font keeps you safely away from that threshold while you set up.

4️⃣ Midgame Value Engine

This is where your board quality starts to matter:

Gnarled Wendigo
Harkening Kraken

You begin:

Winning trades
Applying pressure
Locking the board

Wendigo combined with Shapeshift is particularly strong in grindy matchups.

5️⃣ Late Game – Finishers

Lord of Lies

You deploy them when:

The board is stabilized
Font is active
You control positioning

Then you protect them and end the game.

How to Upgrade Toward @Ceej’s Full Version

As you expand your collection, you can:

Increase top-end consistency
Add stronger splash options (commonly Air)
Improve bomb density
Refine removal slots

This budget list is a stepping stone — a strong one.

It teaches the fundamentals of the archetype while remaining competitive.
